Having a marketing strategy is just good business

Starting a business takes careful planning and a clear understanding of just what the purpose of the business will be. This is where a marketing plan comes into play and this is where clear cut marketing strategies are excessively important to success. The most successful businesses out there, no matter how large or small they are, began with solid marketing strategies and a clear business plan. Marketing has an important role in conducting business. It gets the words out to potential customers and it helps to keep your business on the minds of your current clients. Marketing strategies should include all of the following factors in order to serve your business in the most positive way.

1. Marketing strategies must be formalized
As with a business plan, marketing strategies should be formalized. This is a plan for how you are going to market your business. Your marketing plan should be laid out on paper and kept someplace where those involved in the development of your business have constant access to it. Marketing strategies should include budget for advertising, methods of advertising and communication methods and resources. As with a business plan, marketing strategies should lay out the timeline as to when each strategy should be implemented and accomplished.
2. Marketing strategies must be used to guide your business plan
Use your business plan to guide your marketing strategies. The two plans should work together in synergy. If one contradicts the other, then you will not be successful with either the business plan or the marketing plan. Evaluate your business plan and then break down the parts of the business plan, where marketing will become important. You should identify when communications will be made, what type of communications and how communications will be disseminated. You will also want to identify when advertising will begin, for how long and where.
3. Marketing strategies must be focused
Marketing strategies should be detailed and focused. When you identify that a communication will be sent out to announce a new produce or introduce the business. The marketing strategies must show how the communication will be made and detail what type of information will be sent to clients. In addition to this information, how and when client contacts will be gathered and how they will be maintained must be a part of the marketing strategies. Keep the marketing strategies in front of all key members of your business team. Review your business plan and marketing strategies on a daily basis to assure that everyone is staying focused on them and not straying from the plan.
4. Marketing strategies should provide a roadmap for your business
Make sure your marketing strategy leaves nothing to chance. Everything must be detailed including who is responsible for what, clear timelines, action steps, distribution channels, budget details, pricing parameters, list of competitors, goals, objectives, target audience and specific details on products and services.

Once you have developed a solid business and marketing plan, it is important to stick to it. You may need to revisit it from time to time and modify when problems are identified. However, overall, stick to your plan and you will find business success.
